I’m one of those reflective motivational monday types,(especially at the EOY) before it was trendy, because it’s helped me in hard times, the AI evolution will be hard for many but there is a way to find purpose and win.
Since 2013 For the last 12 years (wow), I have set my goals for the year—not New Year’s resolutions. I have saved them in my iPhone, (see my 2013 ones below) and as I looked back at them, I noticed they generally fall under four categories: happiness, health, family, and wealth so thought the process may inspire someone.
In the last five years, I have made a conscious effort to prioritize health as a foundation (and still have fun).
1. Spend time to reflect
Purpose, principles, and goals are important to us as humans (and even to well trained AI).
They give us a sense of direction and meaning, which enables us to attract others who share that same focus, allowing us to progress together.
2. Only compete with yourself
I've found that my relationship with competition has changed as I've gotten older. Growing up in sports and sales, and being the son of a fighter, competition was a way of life for me. But now, I realize there are so many opportunities out there that I prefer collaboration, discovering what was once unthinkable but you can never shake the competitive streak! :) and feaverish hunger to win but it comes from within.
3. Hunger to win but it comes from within.
Everyone’s goals and principles are personal. However, I believe there are more commonalities among us when we take a deeper look.
Over the past 13 years of goal setting, I’ve noticed that sometimes I don’t achieve a goal in the year I set it, but rather 2-3 years later.
Interestingly, I don’t feel a sense of achievement when I finally reach a goal; instead, I experience a greater sense of pride when I look back on my journey and also during.
4. Journey not the destination
We don’t need to ALWAYS compete against one another; instead, we can refine our skills together, as everyone has a unique purpose.
Hopefully, your goals can help you discover your own purpose, and AI can assist you in getting there.
4. Think MUCH bigger and act now
Recently, I heard about some young people who raised $40m to send data servers to space.
Who would have thought of that as a career path in school?
My personal mission statement is to
“Unlock access to opportunity through inspiration, innovation, and inclusion.”
5. ABL ALWAYS BE LEARNING
I hope you have a fantastic holiday and build towards your purpose in 2025!
Here are my goals from notes in my phone 12 years ago:
**Travel:**
- Visit 5 new cities abroad in 2013
**Health:**
- Stay active by using the gym and playing sports at least 3 times a week
- Q1 goal: Complete the "Beast" obstacle course twice
- Eat well: Limit unhealthy fast food to once a week at most
**Family:**
- Spend more time with my mom and sisters, taking them out every 2 weeks
- Give more time and effort to my family, friends, and loved ones
- Think about where I may want to start my own family
**Wealth:**
- Achieve an invoice amount of £125,000 per quarter at CareerBuilder, with a target salary of £42,000 per month
- Average net bonus based on 12.5%: £15,000
Some of my goals for 2024 have evolved into my principles:
**Principles:**
- Inspire more people to achieve greatness
- Cultivate vibes, energy, and focus
- Reduce negativity and avoid becoming a “grumpy old man”
- Maintain love and blessings
- Bias for action: Execute on strategies
Thus, I look forward to what this year and the future hold!
